Although historical accounts dating back 2,000 years demonstrate the widespread use of milk thistle , its use returned to Germany in the mid-19th century. Its main ingredient, silymarin, after many studies, has been found to be one of the most powerful liver protection substances.
Hepatoprotective effect – Milk thistle protects the liver from possible damage. It also strengthens its function, preventing the destructive action of toxins and activating the growth of new cells to replace the old damaged cells. Silymarin activates glutathione production by 35%.
Antioxidant activity – Silymarin prevents the destructive action of free radicals, due to its strong antioxidant property, which is at least 10 times more powerful than vitamin E.
Anti-inflammatory - silymarin helps protect cell membranes, while limiting the destructive inflammatory action from leukotriene secretion/release.
Cholelithiasis – silymarin significantly increases the solubility of bile in the treatment of cholelithiasis. According to research, the intake of 420mg of silymarin per day for 30 days resulted in a significant reduction of bile cholesterol and bile saturation index.
Psoriasis - Milk thistle has been reported to be extremely beneficial in reducing circulatory system toxins and improving liver function in cases of psoriasis. Silymarin helps and relieves psoriasis sufferers by reducing inflammatory prostaglandins and regulating hormones that control cell replication.
Possible application/Indications: Detoxification of the liver and the body in general, reduction of cholesterol, stimulation of the digestive system, increase of galactorrhea in nursing mothers, drug abuse, alcoholism, long-term use of conventional drugs, liver poisoning (especially from mushrooms).
It has been shown to activate the function of the adrenal glands in cases of long-term use of steroid pharmaceuticals. It acts beneficially in conditions of diabetic neuropathy (diabetic neuropathy).
